  • The Fresh Soft Shell Crabs Have Arrived

    The arrival of soft-shell crabs, whose season runs from March through September, is eagerly awaited each year by FISH TALERS who love them for their unique, crunchy texture and sweet flavor.
    The first soft shell crab catch of 2009 has arrived at Lenny & Joe’s, and when available it will be offered as a dinner, super dinner or as a sandwich. We serve only the fresh whales, the largest available. Availability early in the season is on a day to day basis….so please call before you make a special trip for the crabs.

    Soft shell crabs are crabs that are molting, which is when the hard shell of the crab grows about 30 percent. They have to shed their old shell and when they exit that shell, they are soft for about 2 to 3 hours. Then their shell starts to turn hard again. Showing signs of moulting, peeler crabs are placed in shedding floats (or tanks) until they moult and become softs. Crabs must be checked many times a day so that they can be removed from the water immediately after moulting so that they are not eaten by other crabs and so their shells will not harden.

    Weather permitting, The Charity Carousel at the Madison Drive-In is now open for weekends. This of course means the opening of the outdoor ice cream shack! Hooray- winter must be over! It will be OPEN Sat May 2nd and Sun May 3rd 12-5. Mother’s Day Weekend the Carousel will be open Fri 5-8, Sat 12-6 and Sun 12-6. Please call 203.245.7289 to confirm!
